Algebra Now

Research and Data

As of 2021, the STEM workforce was only 9% African American!
Here is a more specific fact for you With nearly 60,000 eye care providers nationwide, less than 2% of practicing optometrists and ophthalmologists in the United States identify as Black or African American!

And if we look closely and focus on the root of this issue its quite simple and overall looked.

African American students DO NOT receive basic math skills as their peers. Why aren’t more African Americans getting Algebra 1 in the 8th grade? I can’t answer that.

But what I can do, is give it (Algebra 1) to them through this program.
And based on DOE’s policy I am allowed to by all means.

NYC DOE policy states, “Credit by exam is an intentional provision for students who have advanced proficiency in a specific Regents

subject area despite never having studied the content formally in school.”

Therefore, if students can prove before June that they can pass Algebra 1 regents, they can sit for the exam and receive the credit for the class!

Isn’t that amazing we can fix this problem by simply giving all students the opportunity to take and pass Algebra 1 in the 8th grade! Please take a look on Algebra 1 Now Not Later why Algebra 1 in the 8 th grade is so critical

Means to an End

We really want our donors to understand the urgency and simplicity of this matter. Its prevention and not intervention

Means are:

  • Education Focus: Algebra 1 leads to more careers in STEM

  • The current math education path is ineffective if the goal/end is more black students in STEM majors.

  • We know education can and will solve the lack of Blacks in STEM careers.

  • Algebra 1 Now is a NEED AND NOT A LUXURY for STEM students.

End is:
- Successful STEM Career
- Healthy Life
- Comfortable Life
- Purposeful Life
- Fun Life
- Stable Financial Life

I say to my students often

“This math class is a means to an end. It helps you to get what you really want, regardless if you find it enjoyable or not, or if you think it’s important. But I promise you this math course will hunt you latter on and stop you dead in your tracks. So, please pass this class now so that it won’t stop you in college!”
